About the Hungry Jack's Hot Chocolate

A Jack's Cafe Hot Chocolate is $5.40 and 861 kJ. Steamed milk with chocolate through it, no coffee, and it is the caffeine free option on the cafe menu for adults.

At 861 kJ it carries more than any of the milk coffees, which is expected: chocolate brings sugar and cocoa solids that espresso does not. It is a fair bit heavier than a Mocha at 733 kJ, since a mocha replaces some of the chocolate with coffee.

Made properly, a hot chocolate is more than chocolate powder in milk. The chocolate needs to dissolve fully into a small amount of hot liquid first, or it stays as grit at the bottom of the cup. That is the difference between a good one and the version most people make at home.

It is also the drink that sells in winter and disappears in summer more sharply than anything else on the menu, which is why the Iced Chocolate at $5.70 exists alongside it.

  • Dissolve the chocolate in a small amount of hot milk first. Adding powder to a full cup guarantees grit at the bottom.
  • Real chocolate alongside the powder. Powder alone tastes of sugar; chocolate brings cocoa butter and body.
  • The pinch of salt does the same job it does in a chocolate shake, and nobody will identify it.

Variations
