About the Hungry Jack's Grill Masters Smoky Chipotle Angus

The Grill Masters Smoky Chipotle Angus is $16.25 and 3,213 kJ. A thick flame grilled Angus patty with double bacon, melted natural cheese, chipotle sauce and crispy jalapenos on a toasted brioche bun.

Chipotle against a flame grilled Angus patty is the best smoke pairing on the Hungry Jack's menu. The patty already carries char from the open flame, and chipotle is a smoked chilli, so the two reinforce each other instead of competing. Nothing else in the range gets that alignment.

Crispy jalapenos rather than pickled ones is a meaningful choice. Pickled jalapenos are wet and sour, and they would fight both the smoke and the cheese. Crumbed and fried, they bring heat and crunch without water, which suits a dense burger far better.

The numbers are among the most balanced in the range: 45.7g protein, 1,072mg sodium and 29.8g carbs, all comparable with the Chicago Angus. Fat is 52.4g and energy is 3,213 kJ, the second lightest in the Grill Masters lineup.

The heat level is moderate. Chipotle is smoked jalapeno rather than a hot chilli, and the crispy jalapenos add spikes rather than a wall. It is warmer than the Angry Whopper in character but not obviously hotter in intensity.

Who it suits: anyone who wants heat with depth behind it, and anyone who thinks the Cowboy build is too sweet. It is the Grill Masters burger for people who like smoke.

Pair it with Large Frozen Drinks at $2.00, or take the Spicy Chipotle version at $17.80 for more heat.

Tips

  • Dry the jalapenos properly. This is the step that decides if the batter sticks.
  • Chipotle in adobo rather than chipotle powder. The tin has the smoke and the powder does not.
  • No salad in this burger. Adding lettuce out of habit changes what it is.

Variations

  • Two patties gives a Double Grill Masters Smoky Chipotle Angus.
  • More chilli in the sauce moves it toward a Grill Masters Spicy Chipotle Angus.
  • Peppercorn sauce with salad instead gives a Grill Masters Chicago Angus.

Serve with chips and lime wedges. Acid against smoke is what keeps the burger from going flat.
