A Jack's Cafe Iced Coffee is $5.70 and 757 kJ. Espresso over cold milk and ice, and it is the most ordered cold drink on the cafe menu through an Australian summer.

Australian iced coffee is a specific thing and worth distinguishing. In much of the world an iced coffee is chilled black coffee. Here it means coffee with cold milk, and often with ice cream on top, closer to a dessert than to a coffee. Jack's Cafe serves the milk version.

At 757 kJ it carries more than a hot Latte at 534 kJ, because a cold drink holds more milk and because cold mutes sweetness, so cold coffee drinks are generally built sweeter to compensate.

The practical advantage of iced over hot is that it survives. A hot coffee has about ten minutes before it is not worth drinking; an iced coffee is fine for an hour, which matters if it is going in a car.

At $5.70 it costs slightly more than the hot equivalents, which reflects the extra volume.

Tips

  • Chill the espresso before it meets the ice. Three minutes in the freezer is enough and it doubles the strength of the finished drink.
  • Coffee ice cubes are the single best upgrade here. Freeze leftover espresso in a tray and the drink never weakens.
  • Do not stir before serving. The marbling is worth looking at.

Variations

  • Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the traditional Australian version.
  • Caramel syrup and cream gives a Caramel Fudge Iced Coffee.
  • Chocolate instead makes an Iced Mocha.

Serve immediately over plenty of ice. Unlike a hot coffee this one is still good an hour later.
