Every plant based item at Hungry Jack's with prices and kilojoules, which ones are truly vegan and what to ask for at the counter.

Hungry Jack's has a plant based range and it has had one since 2019, which is longer than most Australian fast food chains. What it does not have is a vegan menu, and the difference between those two statements is the whole subject of this post.
Six items sit in the vegetarian section, from the Angry Veggie Whopper Cheese at $12.95 to the Double Veggie Whopper Cheese at $15.45. Looking for Hungry Jack's vegan options means understanding that every one of them is cooked on shared equipment, and that the cheese in most of them is dairy. There are two entirely different products in the range doing two different jobs, and picking the right one depends on what you actually want from the burger.

The plant based patty is engineered to imitate beef and it is flame grilled on the same open flame the beef goes over. A Plant Based Whopper at $12.35 carries 24.6g of protein and 2,317 kJ, against 28.1g and 2,437 kJ for the beef Whopper. It is deliberately close.
The veggie patty is corn, capsicum and carrot, and it is not trying to be beef at all. A Veggie Whopper Cheese carries 17.6g of protein against 61.9g of carbs, and it tastes sweet from the corn and carrot rather than savoury. Long time vegetarians often prefer it for exactly that reason.
The price detail worth knowing: the plant based Whopper costs the same as the beef one. Hungry Jack's does not charge a plant based premium, which is not true of every chain.
Three things stand in the way, and any one of them is enough. The patties are flame grilled on the same equipment as the beef. The cheese in most of the range is dairy. And the veggie patties typically contain egg as a binder.
Hungry Jack's treats the range as vegetarian and makes no vegan claim for it. That is the honest position and this page takes the same one. For anyone avoiding animal products entirely, shared cooking surfaces are the deciding factor rather than the ingredient list, and no amount of ordering modification changes that.
For protein, the Plant Based Angry Whopper at $14.05 carries 30.4g, the highest in the range, and it is genuinely spicy. Chilli suits a plant patty better than it suits beef, since the patty is more neutral underneath its seasoning and the heat has room to sit forward.
For the closest thing to a straight Whopper, the Plant Based Whopper Cheese at $13.30 is what most people settle on. The cheese does structural work a plant patty needs more than beef does, and it softens the harder seasoning plant patties carry.
For the cheapest way in, the Angry Veggie Whopper Cheese at $12.95 undercuts every other vegetarian burger on the board.
Beyond the burgers, the sides are worth a mention with the same caveat. Thick Cut Chips at $3.45 and Battered Onion Rings at $5.20 are potato and onion, but they are cooked in shared fryers alongside meat products.
On drinks and desserts the soft drinks and the Frozen Coke at $2.00 carry no animal products, while the shakes, sundaes and Storms are all dairy based.
